Gameplay Overview
After a long absence from Fatal Fury, Kim Kaphwan is finally back! This staple of SNK fighting games is a close-range pressure character whose ability to string together damage and blockstrings is matched by few, if any, in the cast.
While Jae Hoon is about defense and footsies, and Dong Hwan is about acrobatics and mix-ups, Kaphwan is about pressure and punishment. He is absolutely relentless up close, with good normals, strong specials, and the return of his Haki Kyaku stomp. This once-infamous special lets Kaphwan stomp multiple times in a row, locking down the opponent, or go into a stance whose options enable high/low mix, call out mashing, or even cash out into high damage with a Counter Hit. You can use these techniques and the threat of an invincible reversal to intimidate the opponent into clamming up, giving you free reign to hammer away at their guard and REV gauge.
Kaphwan has one other unique quirk: he’s uniquely strong in the air, too! Boasting a cancellable air heavy, a strong divekick special in Hishou Kyaku, a powerful air-to-air move in Kuusen Kyaku, and an air super, Kaphwan can simply rule out jumping as a means of escaping his pressure, or call out certain anti-airs. Add on top of that his flashkick and good normals for hop checking, and the skies are all but off-limits against Kaphwan.
Kaphwan’s main issue lies in struggling to gain or retain momentum without resources. With no long-range normals, neutral skips, or anti-fireball moves of any kind, you may have to commit hard to get in on more passive opponents. He also has a tendency to reset to neutral inconveniently often due to the poor advantage on his soft knockdowns. Once he’s in, though, it’s up to the player to make it count with his suffocating offense, obliterating opponents’ health bars and patience in the name of that sweet justice.
Pros & Cons
thumb_up PROS
- Relentless Attacker: Kaphwan’s greatest strength lies in his seemingly endless blockstrings and offense. Good frame data, a divekick, a strong stomp into stance options, and more mean Kaphwan can string together a long-lasting barrage of chip damage and frame traps, using the Haki Kyaku stance for stagger pressure to beat Just Defend. Many of his special moves have easy Counter Hit conversions, as well.
- Aerial Threat: Access to two dedicated aerial specials, an air super, and a juggling, cancellable j.C make Kaphwan a threatening presence against grounded and airborne opponent alike. He can convert into these from his Flashkick and his REV divekick, giving him impressive anti-air or even air-to-ground damage.
- High Damage: Between higher-than-average damage on his normals and surprisingly freeform combo structure, Kaphwan can rack up some incredible damage off of any hit. Thanks to flashkick brake, Kaphwan even gets surprising damage from his lights.
- Flashkick: Having a flashkick instead of a DP allows Kaphwan’s players to use its invincibility more reactively. When braking the Heavy version, Kaphwan can destroy opponents for jumping in on him while he has charge, even if they’re about to cross him up.
- Meter Build: Thanks to his long pressure sequences, Kaphwan can build more meter on average when it’s his turn than other characters do. This is important as Kaphwan’s supers give him many things he otherwise doesn’t have, like invincibility without charge, a hard knockdown, or long-range punishment.
thumb_down CONS
- Weak Okizeme: All of Kaphwan’s meterless enders lack substantial knockdown advantage, meaning he’ll struggle to safely chase or cover wakeup rolls without a hard read. Without REV Blow or a super, Kaphwan will reset to neutral more often than an offensive character would like.
- Zoned Out: Kaphwan is at his strongest up close, but he lacks ways to skip neutral or deal with fireballs to get up close quickly. He has to get in the old-fashioned way, which can pose problems against zoners like Kain or Krauser.
- Flashkick: Due to requiring charge for his invincible reversal, Kaphwan can’t quickly reposition before anti-airing with it, nor can he use it immediately after blocking an overhead or jump-in. Charging it can leave you vulnerable to overheads and throws.
