Gameplay Overview

Terry in CotW is a simple, rushdown oriented character with a moveset perfect for throwing his weight around while holding his own in neutral.

Alongside a good fireball, DP, and set of normals, Terry has strong approach options, such as his Burn Knuckle (214P), REV Power Wave (236AC) and more. Those moves also help form what Terry’s best at: his overwhelming pressure. He can constantly throw moves at the opponent and force them to deal with a swath of incoming chip and frame traps that, if they guess wrong, turn into high-damage Counter Hits that melt their HP. When Terry throws his weight around a little too hard, he’s no slouch on defense either, sporting good abares to mash and an invincible reversal in Power Dunk (since he has no Rising Tackle in this game).

Constant plus frame resets are good and all, but mix-ups are what really makes an offense shine, and that’s the one area Terry struggles in. With no overhead besides the universal Low Dodge Attack, poor reward from lows, and many of his plus-frame moves pushing out of throw range, Terry struggles to open up patient opponents. He relies on driving up their REV gauge with constant pressure and frame traps rather than mixing up their guard.

A case can be made for Terry being one of the easiest characters in the game for beginners, as you can use the REV system to throw moves out with little consequence. While that’s true, he also has a lot of depth to him, making him plenty suitable for veterans as well. If you like all-rounders with the ability to brawl with the best of ‘em, look no further than the Hungry Wolf.

Pros & Cons

thumb_up PROS

  • Approach Tools: Burning Knuckle, Crack Shoot, and REV Power Wave help Terry to close the distance and start his offense. REV Power Wave is a slow, grounded projectile that lets him advance and apply pressure. Crack Shoot can avoid some low attacks and projectiles, it can even be plus on block on crouching opponents, and his Rev Blow has very good range.
  • Plus Frames: Terry has multiple ways to access easy plus frames even outside of feint pressure. Tools like 236BD, 236[AC], 214BD and even his cl.D are all plus and can make an opponent second guess about trying to take their turn back on his pressure.
  • Counter Hit Damage: Terry’s Counter Hits score some of the highest damage in the game. Some of his specials do full damage on CH and launch into huge combos that can easily take half health or more on top of cornering the opponent almost guaranteed. This also makes his DP punishes stronger than the rest of the cast.
  • Buster-GEYSER!: In the corner, Terry has the ability to combo his two ignition gears into each other, which not only increases the damage he can gain from his meter in the same combo, it also saves him from accidentally overspending his meter, as he doesn't need to commit to spending two super bars.

thumb_down CONS

  • All Mids: Terry is quite good at getting in and keeping up pressure, but he doesn't have any dedicated mixup tools like most other characters besides basic strike/throw, and even his Low Dodge overhead is significantly slower than most. By no means is his offense ineffective, but it's definitely easier to defend against.
