Gameplay Overview
The easiest way to describe Andy in CotW is that he is a more aggressive take on Akuma from Street Fighter. He’s a rushdown character outfitted with a fireball, air fireball, uppercut, demon flip complete with a cross-up and command grab, and in typical Andy fashion, he still has his multiple gap-closing special moves in Zan’ei Ken (236P) and Kuuha Dan (236K).
This mass of tricky yet safe moves gives Andy six ways to Sunday to play solid neutral, get in, mix up, pressure, force mistakes, and more, not to mention his combo versatility using the REV system. He’s no slouch on defense, either; in addition to an invincible DP and a reversal super that can be tricky to punish, Andy enjoys a strong, safe backdash cancel option in REV Kuu Hishou Ken (j.214AC) that can turn opponents’ low and throw attempts into a combo for Andy himself.
Where Andy is weakest is in his normals. He has several issues on this front, from struggling to confirm from lights, to lacking a good heavy for poking despite the range on his 5C. On top of weakening his neutral game, it means Andy can’t reliably lock down opponents into a mix-up until he gets a knockdown, and has to resort to either increased risk or spending REV to truly get his scary offense going from beyond close range.
When it does get going, though, Andy employs some of the game’s scariest offense and strongest momentum. Players who like to overwhelm opponents with multiple ways to play the rushdown game will have a whirl playing the new take on this classic Fatal Fury protagonist.
Pros & Cons
thumb_up PROS
- Rewarding Combos: The corner carry off of most of Andy's convertable hits is incredible, and it is frequently backed by strong damage, as well as a good knockdown he can use to start offense with safejumps or projectile oki.
- Annoying Neural: Andy's Demon Flip alone makes many neutral interactions with him into a guessing game, but with access to an air fireball, an enormous f.C, and a fast air Rev Blow on top of that, Andy's presence in neutral is very solid.
- Good Pressure: Andy has frequent access to safejumps and reversal-safe setups with his air fireball, made more rewarding by his abundance of plus frames, ranged pressure options, and high reward on hit.
thumb_down CONS
- Weak lights: Andy's A and B attacks are mostly very limited on range, and really only shine up close and in confirms, locking him out of low-commitment pokes and making him weaker against Rev Guard.
- Flawed Poking: While Andy's far C is an incredible button for neutral, it's not only slow (and unrewarding without super), he also pays a price for having it in his other options having subpar hitboxes, reward, or both.
