Character Trivia

A battle-hardened Metro City agent who arrives in South Town, by request, to investigate the resurgence of an infamous criminal syndicate. Few wolves here can match the strength, style, and grace of this World Warrior—let alone best her outright. Perhaps the only one who can hold a candle to her is the fiery kunoichi of the Shiranui clan.

Gameplay Overview

Chun-Li is the second guest character from Street Fighter to grace City of the Wolves. Though she sports her Street Fighter 6 look, this version of Chun-Li plays most like her infamous 3rd Strike version (albeit balanced better), while borrowing many different things from each past version of the character.

Like in 3rd Strike, Chun-Li is very well-rounded, but focuses on strong neutral control and footsies rather than raw aggression. She loves to fight in the mid-range, whittling away the opponent with her very strong normal attacks, both super- and special-cancellable. When the opponent opens themselves up, Chun-Li can use her great normals or her DP to turn one small mistake by her opponent into a ton of damage. Generous frame advantage on some normals really let her freestyle combos, using multiple links or REV Accel — however she wants to rack up her high damage, while also sporting a suite of powerful moves for mix-up potential, like a comboable overhead, low, or a Brake into a throw.

The biggest downside to Chun-Li in this game is that she lacks strong tools for hyper-aggression or zoning. Her only special moves that aren’t punishable on block are her REV fireball and REV legs, (when you Brake it). Not to mention, like Ken and Tizoc, Chun-Li cannot cancel her forward dash into a move, which strips away a layer of offense that the vast majority of the cast has access to. Of course, you can use REV Accel to push an offense, or turtle behind a fireball-DP neutral like a zoner, but Chun-Li really shines when she gets to play a proactive neutral game and out-space her adversary.

If the neutral game, overwhelming your opponent with tons of tools and confirming your way to victory sounds like your kind of character, you will definitely want to put the time into playing Chun-Li. Or if you want… just play her for kicks. Literally.

Pros & Cons

thumb_up PROS

  • Fantastic neutral: Chun-Li’s long pokes, great walk speed and access to both a projectile and DP make getting in on her a daunting task. Whiffing against her is also dangerous due to long-reaching Wild Punish starters such as her 6C.
  • Combo Machine: Chun-Li can effortlessly confirm into more powerful combos using powerful normal links, single-hit confirms, and her ability to cancel REV specials to supers.
  • Above Average Damage: Building on the last point, Chun-Li’s damage is unexpectedly high thanks to those same links and confirms resulting in combos scaling less than those that use REV specials, not to mention being able to use two supers in a combo. If Chun-Li has full resources, she can easily do 60% or more, with or without SPG.
  • Strong Mix-Up Potential: Meaty setups off of any hard knockdown, a command crossup in her 3B, an overhead that can be faked out, an overhead that combos on hit, and a cancellable low make Chun-Li’s offense and mixups not only versatile, but highly rewarding and often leading to vortex situations.
  • Slippery: Chun-Li is a difficult character to keep down, with her strong and fast DP, along with multiple tools to escape the corner like her wall jump and 3B.

thumb_down CONS

  • Cannot Cancel Dash: Unlike most characters with a forward dash, Chun-Li’s dash cannot be cancelled into a move, making its use significantly more committal than other characters while taking away surprise throws and dash-up normals that other characters can do. She is thus forced to rely on her above-average walk speed to work her way in.
  • Bad Fireball: Chun-Li’s projectile is very slow to start up and recover compared to other characters, to the point of sometimes being punishable on hit. This heavily limits its use outside of the REV version.
  • LET’S GO JUSTIN!: Many of Chun-Li’s sequences on block, especially safe special cancels, are multiple hits, meaning Just Defense and Hyper Defense are especially effective against Chun-Li if her opponent knows the matchup. This can also make her more vulnerable to comebacks.
  • Technically Demanding: There is very little room for error with Chun-Li when it comes to execution, due to command normals with similar inputs yet wildly different functions, a reliance on linking, and to a lesser extent, input overlap. If you slip up and don’t get the move or combo you want, the mistake can reasonably lend to a round loss.
