Gameplay Overview
Cristiano Ronaldo is a standout character in the CotW cast, for many reasons. As you’d expect of a football/soccer player, a lot of his game revolves around conjuring magical Balls that he kicks around in various ways, making him a monster at setplay, mix-ups, and even zoning when needed.
Ronaldo is truly a menace on offense, however. Once he sets up a Ball, he can knock it around with his other moves, using the Balls to play neutral, approach behind using his multiple advancing moves, or even mindgame the opponent. Knocking the opponent down lets Ronaldo set a Ball up to do anything, from setting up left-rights or high-lows, to pressuring while staying safe from reversals, forcing the opponent to make constant guesses on defense. Not only does this give Ronaldo among the best okizeme of the cast, but every combo from the Balls does insane damage, especially with meter.
Without access to Balls, though, Ronaldo begins to fall apart. He lacks strong, cancellable pokes that other characters have, leaving him with some really subpar options when he has no time to set up a Ball. He has an invincible DP (623P) and some absolutely obnoxious attacks even without the Ball, such as his far C and Low Dodge Attack — but with their flaws, you can’t always rely on them to get you out of a tight spot.
If you can overcome these weird quirks, you can enjoy a wholly unique character with a near-infinite skill ceiling. When you put in the time to learn Ball setups and are able to apply his tech and setplay in a real match, then you’ll really start to ball out with Ronaldo.
Pros & Cons
thumb_up PROS
- Aggression-facilitating Normals: Ronaldo's advancing normals, of which there are many, are more than worth the lack of conventional pokes. Far A is more plus than most of the game's heavy normals, and far C has enough active frames and range to effectively be a neutral skip with disproportionately low risk, and yet some of the game's highest damage behind it. Both of these options are also assisted by the game's best 2D, one of its biggest far D's, and Ronaldo's great midrange specials.
- Setplay Machine: Ronaldo's Ball can create various powerful, reversal-safe setups on the opponent's wakeup, enabling a powerful mixup game with a lot of damage behind it. Even after the Ball disappears, Ronaldo has great options to force plus frames and restart his offense with spacing traps.
- Space Control: In addition to facilitating good offense, Ronaldo's Ball is also very good at harassing the opponent from range, often with the threat of a conversion from the pokes and approach tools Ronaldo has access to. Sometimes, just summoning the ball is all it takes to make an opponent slow down, granting Ronaldo some breathing room.
- High Damage: Ronaldo's confirms have some of the highest average damage in the game, and his ability to convert into full combos from spaced advancing attacks or ball setups only makes his ability to steal round on a whim even more powerful.
thumb_down CONS
Vulnerable to whiff punishes: While his impressive suite of forward-advancing attacks averages out to a significant net positive, the lack of conventional pokes still makes him especially vulnerable if these attacks whiff. If he isn’t outright whiff punished, he could at least find himself stuck on defense as a consequence of whiffing an attack.
