Gameplay Overview
Rick Strowd is Fatal Fury’s take on the beloved speed boxer archetype. Using his amazing mobility, this technical rushdown character ducks and weaves his way in before tearing foes apart with an endless barrage of strikes and combinations.
Rick’s game plan is a simple one: get in and don’t stop ‘til they drop. He can keep going seemingly endlessly with his great close normals, stagger pressure, stance transitions, and command dashes with various follow-ups. To open up stubborn opponents, he can go high or low from his Aggressor Stance (4AC/6AC), or keep the advantage with Blazing Sunburst (236P); he’s even equipped with a powerful, Brakable anti-air in Hellion (623P). When they cave and take the hit, use his numerous offensive sequences to confirm his high combo damage, and use Shooting Star (236K) to keep up the attack even after you’ve knocked them down.
As you may have guessed, a character who’s so strong up close, isn’t very capable from afar. Rick relies heavily on his advancing specials to close the gap, and they are easily stuffed or baited to whiff. When things go south for Rick, they go south fast, as he has no invincible reversal aside from his supers. While his one-dimensional neutral can make keeping him out rather easy, he can at least ignore projectiles with Full Moon Fever (214P), or even punish them with Howling Bull (236236K).
All in all, Rick is a very fun character, but he is by no means an easy one — his highly technical gameplay will challenge your execution, game knowledge, and adaptability. But master this deep character, and you might just “Exceed the Limit” you thought you had as a player!
Pros & Cons
thumb_up PROS
- High-speed offense: Rick can maintain a fast pace once he gets close to his opponent. Good use of his fast attacks up close, combined with his command dash and other (mediocre) pressure tools, allow Rick to overwhelm his opponent with high-speed offense and stay one step ahead, at least in theory. His options versus Rev Guard are also uniquely strong such as Blazing Sunburst (236P) doing impressive rev damage and Rev Hellion brake lets him be +3 in his opponent's face with basically no pushback.
- Consistent High Damage: When Rick finds the big hit he needs he can always make it hurt. His damage is above average even without rev or meter usage. His corner combos in particular are very rev efficient and build a ton of meter.
thumb_down CONS
- Short effective range: In order to pose any sort of threat, Rick has to move in and constantly take risks. He has no good normals for poking and no reliable gap-closers, meaning he has to pick his openings carefully just to get started.
- Poor defense: Rick has no meterless reversal, his anti-air options are mediocre at best, 236236P is a contender for worst reversal super attack in the game with a comically small hitbox, and his Guard Cancel options leave much to be desired.
- Fake, unrewarding mixups: If opponents know when to take their turn back, the illusion of constant pressure is shattered. Much of Rick’s mixups come with risk/reward spreads that favor his opponent.
