Gameplay Overview
Much improved from his unremarkable debut in Garou, Tizoc is this game’s resident grappler character, armed with tons of powerful command grabs and a potent poking game to help him brawl his way in.
At the core of Tizoc’s game plan is Justice Hurricane (360P), a highly damaging command grab that leads into looping okizeme, and one of many throws for any situation, including an incredible grab super in Big Fall Griffon (720P) with huge damage and instant startup. He’s not all about the grabs, though; Tizoc has solid normals all around that force his opponent to cede ground until they run out of room, unique but solid Dodge Attacks to work around opponents’ defenses, and lunging strike specials that can be Braked to condition his opponent to block and potentially get scooped. When he gets his hands on his opponent, be it a hit or throw, Tizoc has ways to convert into a hard knockdown to put opponents into an utterly terrifying guessing game.
The challenge with Tizoc, however, is getting in in the first place. Tizoc is very slow, and he isn’t offered the same mobility options as other characters, instead having unique movement that is risky but rewarding. The REV system unfortunately doesn’t provide a way for Tizoc to burst past pokes and the like from his opponent, either. Thus Tizoc’s ability to dictate the match is very limited, and your patience will be tested heavily while playing him.
Patience, however, is very rewarding with this character. Eventually, the opportunity to burst in and get grappling will present itself, and when it does, Tizoc rides a (Poseidon) wave of momentum like no other character in the game. It’s moments like these that make this character incredibly satisfying to play!
Pros & Cons
thumb_up PROS
- Huge hitboxes: For how slow they are, most of Tizoc’s normals come with best-in-class range compared to most other fighters. Far A is a great example, packing a hitbox with greater horizontal range than what most others would get out of their far heavies.
- Hard Knockdowns: Tizoc has many command grabs, as well as 214BD (and OTG 214BD) that let him score hard knockdowns without needing a super or Rev Blow. For these, no post-knockdown recovery roll is possible, and compared to other characters relying exclusively on Rev Blow or Supers for oki like this, Tizoc has a good ability to keep up offense when he opens his opponent up.
- High-reward defense: For how difficult it can be to utilize, guard cancels are especially rewarding with Tizoc. 5-9 frame command grabs allow Tizoc to be a constant threat during the opponent’s guard pressure, turning any close-range Just Defend into an opportunity to drop 100-250 damage on the opponent through some pretty tight gaps uncontestable by others.
thumb_down CONS
- Very slow: Tizoc has some of the slowest movement and slowest frame data in the game, being one of very few characters with no 4 frame attacks. He cannot cancel his dash into normals, only a Hyper Jump early in its animation. Note that Hyper Jump startup can be cancelled into specials, effectively increasing their range (useful for command grabs), though this is still worse than a regular dash.
- Too dependent on Rev meter: Tizoc frequently has to spend on Rev Guard or successfully Guard Cancel his way out of defense. Tizoc also frequently needs 25 meter or more just to end a combo or secure oki, as such he will be very hungry for Rev at any phase of the game, further emphasizing the importance of taking every Just Defend he can get.
- Unreliable anti-airs: Tizoc tends to struggle to anti-air when the opponent is jumping/hopping close to him, which they are incentivized to do by Tizoc's threatening grabs.
